End of Term 1 and Start of Term 2

23 October 2026 (by Sonia Coles (scoles))

What a long and busy Term 1 it has been! It has been lovely to see the children settle into the routines of school life so quickly.

They have approached their learning with enthusiasm, enjoyed our topic work, and worked exceptionally hard across all areas of the curriculum. We are incredibly proud of the effort and determination they have shown and feel they are well and truly ready for a well-deserved week off!

Looking Ahead to Term 2

Our next topic is History, where we will be learning about the Stone Age, Bronze Age and Iron Age. Throughout the term, the children will explore what life was like during these periods and consider an interesting question: Which period would they have preferred to live in and why?

To make our learning even more exciting, we have a trip planned to Earth Trust on 12th November 2026, where the children will have the opportunity to learn more about life during these prehistoric periods through a range of engaging activities.

Science

We have now concluded our Science topic on Rocks. The children thoroughly enjoyed this unit and showed great curiosity throughout. It was wonderful to see so many children bringing in their own collections of rocks and fossils to share with the class. Their enthusiasm and interest helped bring our learning to life.

English

During the first two weeks of Term 2, we will be writing a non-chronological fact file linked to our history topic. The children will learn how to organise their writing using paragraphs, headings and subheadings. They will also continue to expand their vocabulary and incorporate new and ambitious words into their writing to make it more engaging and informative.

Maths

In Maths, we have been focusing on column addition and subtraction. The children have been developing their understanding by using pictorial representations alongside formal written methods. This has helped them clearly understand and represent the process of exchanging across the tens and hundreds columns.

Homework

Maths homework has been set on worksheets. I would encourage the children to clearly show any exchanging that takes place and draw the number representations on scrap paper where needed. Ideally, this should be completed as independently as possible to help build confidence and fluency.

Spellings were issued last week, and regular reading and times tables practice remain essential. Topic homework next term will involve researching the Stone Age, Bronze Age and Iron Age, helping the children to develop their knowledge ready for our new learning.

Reading Text

For Term 2, I am pleased to say that we have enough copies of our class reading text, The Stone Age Boy, for all children to use in school.

Thank you for your continued support this term. Wishing you all a wonderful half-term break filled with rest, relaxation and family time. We look forward to welcoming the children back refreshed and ready for another exciting term of learning.
