Week Ahead In Discovery

21 June 2026 (by Sonia Coles (scoles))

What a hot end to the week we have had!

The warm weather has certainly made its presence felt, and with temperatures set to remain high over the coming days, we have been making sure the children stay hydrated, take regular opportunities to cool down, and enjoy some shaded outdoor time whenever possible.

English

This week, the children have been preparing to write their own newspaper reports based on the story of The Egyptian Cinderella. They have explored examples of real newspapers, analysed a model text, and examined an example newspaper report to identify and discuss the key features of this style of writing. The children have enjoyed spotting headlines, by-lines, direct and reported speech, and other features that make newspaper reports engaging and informative. This work will continue on Monday and Tuesday as they begin planning and writing their own reports.

Mathematics

We have completed our unit on Time. The children have worked hard to develop their understanding of reading, comparing, and calculating time using both analogue and digital clocks. To help embed and secure this knowledge, please continue to practise telling the time at home using both types of clock whenever possible.

Our next unit will focus on Money, where the children will be learning to recognise, compare, calculate, and solve problems involving pounds and pence.

Hill End Residential

The excitement is building for our residential trip!

Children should arrive at school at the normal time on Wednesday. Please ensure that they:

  • Have sunscreen applied before arriving at school.
  • Bring a named bottle of fresh water.
  • Wear comfortable and appropriate clothing suitable for the weather and activities.

With a heatwave expected, we will be taking every precaution to ensure the children remain safe and comfortable throughout the trip.

Please remember that children will need a packed lunch on Wednesday. We kindly ask that no sweets are brought to share with the group; however, a small treat within their own packed lunch is absolutely fine.

We will do our best to send photographs back to school during the trip, which Mrs. Greenwood will share with families where possible.

On Friday, we are aiming to return before the end of the school day and will keep you updated should there be any changes.

Homework

Homework has been set to cover the next two weeks.

  • Spelling test: Thursday 3rd July.
  • Atom Learning tasks.
  • Times Tables Rock Stars practice.
  • Regular reading at home.

Please note that no SPaG booklets have been sent home due to the residential trip.

Thank you, as always, for your continued support. We wish all our families a safe and enjoyable week ahead and hope you manage to keep cool during the hot weather.
