Unicorn Class Term 1 Week 8

28 October 2026 (by Rebecca Fenwick (rfenwick))

Unicorn Class Blog                    Term 1 Week 8              Week Commencing 19th October 2026

Wow, what an amazing busy term with lots of fun, creative learning and exploring. All the children have settled beautifully.

We have enjoyed doing a range of autumn and Halloween activities.

We have loved listening to ‘Whizz! Pop! Granny, Stop’ and ‘Hubbly Bubble Granny trouble’ by Tracey Corderoy, ‘Winnie the Witch’ stories and ‘Amara’s Farm’ by Janay Brown-Wood and Illustrated by Samara Hardy. We used our fine motor skills to collect spiders in a big web using tweezers. We have also enjoyed making potions, meals and puddings using the pumpkins and seeds. We have made big spiders, webs, and decorated pumpkins. We made bubbling cauldrons by blowing bubbles and putting our pictures on top. We loved watching the disco lights, spotting what colours we could see, how it made lights on each other and on the classroom walls, ceiling and carpet. We had fun playing musical statues and musical bumps.

During our hall time we played a range of games such as ‘Traffic Lights’, ‘Sharks Coming’ and ‘What’s the time Wicked Witch?’ We were good at listening to instructions, taking turns and moving quickly in different ways.

We have continued to help make poorly and injured (toy) animals better and there was great excitement when a real cat came to see us in the Unicorn outside area.  Outside we have also enjoyed sweeping up leaves, splashing in puddles, spider hide and seek, finding bats, pumpkins and ghosts, going on adventures with rucksacks, building, running, climbing, using the balance bikes, scooters and tricycles.

Our maths focus this week has been saying one number for each item in order. We have been using objects such as small teddies, pieces of fruit, seeds, spiders,  and vehicles. We have also enjoyed playing counting games and doing number songs.

During phonics we have been learning and singing the ‘Little Miss Muffet sat on a tuffet’ nursery rhyme. We have been orally segmenting and blending words from the rhyme. Lots of us wanted to be recorded saying the nursery rhyme and then playing a game where we had to listen very carefully and see if we could recognise who was saying the rhyme,

This week we have loved using the water tray to explore sinking and floating. We have used the magnetic shapes to make amazing models that we have enjoyed working independently and together, to work out what to build, how to build it and talking about what they had made. We have also enjoyed using the brio trains, playing in the home corner and sharing books.

After half term our topic will be, ‘What is a celebration?’, on the first week back we will be doing bonfire night and Diwali activities.

Hope you all have a wonderful half term next week

Best wishes

Mrs Fenwick
