Unicorn Class Term 1 Week 717 October 2026 (by Rebecca Fenwick (rfenwick)) |
Unicorn Class Blog Term 1 Week 7 Week Commencing 12th October 2026
This week we have had another fantastic week of fun, creative learning and exploring.
We have enjoyed listening to the ‘Pumpkin Soup’ story by Helen Cooper. We had the opportunity to have discussions about how the animals in the story were feeling, whether their actions were kind and about working together. They have also enjoyed acting out their own story using the cat, duck and squirrel puppets and have made some very interesting soups working together.
We had great fun preparing the pumpkin, we were fascinated by how many seeds were inside and how slippery, slimy, smooth and sticky they were.
Some of us have been sharing stories with each other and listening to stories. There were discussions around how the characters may be feeling, why and what the characters could have done differently.
The home corner has again been popular this week with children pretending to be families in their home, dressing the babies, pretending to work from home, taking important work calls and preparing meals ready to go off to golf.
At Forest school we collected autumn leaves for our lantern ornaments, we noticed the leaves were still damp so we waited until they had dried then stuck them on our lanterns. We discussed that candles get very hot and can burn so a grown up needs to light it and our lanterns are for looking at and not touching. We were fascinated by the reflection in the pond, “Look, it looks like the aeroplane is flying in the pond.” Huck also noticed his reflection in the interactive white board later in the classroom.
During maths this week we have been singing number songs such as 5 Little Duck, 5 Currant buns and 5 Green speckled frogs. We have been focusing on counting, saying one number for each item, showing ‘finger’ numbers up to 5 and solving real number problems. We were learning ‘One elephant went out to play’ which we really enjoyed. We have also enjoyed using pictures in books to count objects.
During phonics we have had a focus on alliteration, rhyming, oral blending and segmenting. As part of this we have been learning the ‘Peter Piper’ rhyme. We listened carefully to words in the rhyme and helped Mrs Fenwick write a list of all the things beginning with ‘p’. We discussed the beginning sounds of children’s names and other objects. We have been orally segmenting e.g. jump (j-u-m-p) and h-o-p. We have enjoyed making silly soup with rhyming objects, spotting rhyming words in books and in the rhyming bag.
This week we listened to ‘The Family Book’ by Todd Parr. We discussed who was in our family, similarities and differences between each other. We drew pictures of family members, discussed our special people and why they were special.
Next week we will be doing autumn/Halloween activities.
Hope you all have a lovely weekend and looking forward to seeing you all next week for more exploring.
Best wishes
Mrs Fenwick
