Unicorn Class Term 1 Week 4

25 September 2026 (by Rebecca Fenwick (rfenwick))

Unicorn Class Blog                    Term 1 Week 4               Week Commencing 21st September 2026

This week we have had another fantastic week of fun, creative learning and exploring.

This week children in the Unicorn’s class enjoyed listening to different versions of The Little Red Hen and discussing the story,. We made bread like the Little Red Hen. However, we worked together unlike the farm animals in the story. The children listened carefully to the instructions and enjoyed scooping, pouring, stirring, and kneading. We were fascinated by how much rising our bread rolls did during proofing. The bread smelt delicious when it was cooked, and we were excited about tasting it. We were able to make pictures of the Little Red Hen using shapes, we discussed the shapes we were using for the various parts and where we were going to put the shapes.

We have been planting cress. We were very impressed that some of them had started to grow when we arrived at school the next day. We have been taking good care of our cress by using the water sprayer on them when needed.

During maths we have had a shape focus which has included completing puzzles, selecting pre-cut shapes to make Little Red Hen pictures. The wooden blocks and the magnetic tiles were used to make homes, parks, farms and castles for the teddies and farm animals. We used informal and mathematical language around the shapes whilst taking part in these activities.

During phonics we have been joining in with a ‘Myself’ rhyme, which was then used to play the ‘Stand up, Sit down’ rhyming game. We looked at other objects that rhyme with words from the rhyme such as me, bee, sea, three and nose, toes, hose, crows etc. We played a rhyme substitution game and used body percussion.

During our hall time we played our ready steady go game moving in different ways, ‘What’s the time Mr Wolf’ and used balls to throw, kick, roll and catch.

This week we have also enjoyed painting, using the water tray to explore objects with holes in, using the trucks, diggers and shells in the sand. The big sandpit has also been used to make “Giant holes”, “Big sandcastles”, “A volcano” and covering up legs and hands.

Next week we will be continuing with our ‘All about me topic’ and having a ‘Harvest/Autumn’ theme which will include making soup and making autumn collections.

Hope you all have a lovely weekend and look forward to seeing you all next week for more exploring.

Best wishes

Mrs Fenwick
