Dear parents and carers,
Well done to our newly-elected school and eco-council!
This week Endeavour have been exploring the push/pull factors for migration in our population topic. Next week they will be discovering the impact climate change can have on the population.
English lessons this week have produced some fantastic diary entries from both year groups. They have also been tasty!
Chapter 9 sees the narrator desperately searching with their mother to find a shop that sells pomegranates, in the hope it will make the new boy smile and think of home... We opened a pomegranate in year 6 (thank you to Alejandra) and all had a try, which was wonderful and inspired some lovely drawings from the children (see pics).
Coming up next week...
House and Vice-captains to be announced on Monday! Huge well done to Year 6 - your speeches were fantastic. You were all calm and confident, spoke clearly and impressed everyone.
In English we will be writing information texts about migration. This is will be a topic-based piece of writing, focusing on features specific to the genre such as use of headings and sub-headings, bullet points and cohesive structure.
Homework - Year 6: ATOM for maths and spellings are in planners.
A quick word about 'fidget' toys...
There have been several toys brought in to school this week and the children have all been told they are not allowed. There is little evidence to suggest the plastic spinny, fidget toys do anything to aid concentration. The negative effects in the classroom of such toys is out-weighing any potential support they could offer a child. We have a variety of appropriate tools and strategies to support children who find it more challenging to concentrate for long periods. This is why we give brain breaks and movement breaks every 45 minutes. I would appreciate your support in making sure no more toys are brought to school, please.

From Miss Ravenscroft for Year 5:
Another brilliant week for writing in Year 5 this week!! This week the children have been working on a diary entry from one of the characters from our class book and I have thoroughly enjoyed reading the children's works from their perspective of how they felt one of the characters had view a particular event that we have read so far. The children were able to include lots of examples of relative clauses to add more information to their sentences alongside adverbials of time to help their work flow.
Maths this week has again been looking at place value and how they can use their previous knowledge of column addition and subtraction to calculate these within tenths too. Some of the questions were throwing the children as it wrote the product at the start of the equation rather than at the end like they are used to but were quick to pick up this up and were very solid by the end of the week!
At the start of the week the year 5's were told who was successful in becoming an eco or school council and we cannot wait to see what they can bring to the school.

English- Please read chapter 8 (Year 5 only)
Maths- ATOM learning - Please do encourage your child to complete this as it is useful to know which areas need a little more work.
Spellings- New spellings have been given out ready for next Friday's test
