Unicorn Class Term 5 Week 515 May 2026 (by Rebecca Fenwick (rfenwick)) |
Unicorn Class Blog Term 5 Week 5 Week Commencing 11th May 2026
This week we have been exploring fruit. As part of this we loved playing a Kim's game using a melon, apple, blueberry, mango, pear, banana and apple. We were good at taking turns and giving clues to help if someone was unsure, such as, “It is a fruit that is yellow and monkeys like.”, “It begins with P like Posie and parrots.”
We carefully used knives to prepare different fruit for our delicious fruit salad which we enjoyed eating.
Our fine motor skills were also used to draw/colour, cut, use the hole puncher and to make salt dough fruit to sell and buy at our fruit market. Once it was set up we enjoyed selling and buying the fruit and then using it to have picnics and prepare food in our home corner.
There have been lots of children setting challenges to themselves on the climbing frame, using balance, getting onto rope swings and pedal bikes showing determination, perseverance and extremely pleased with themselves with the results. Which has also been increasing their gross motor skills. We also enjoyed parachute games.
We have been fascinated by our growing sunflower plants and have noticed that the leaves are getting bigger, more leaves are growing and they are getting taller. We also noticed that some are still not growing. We checked one sunflower and noticed that it had split and a root had started to grow, we made sure we covered it back in compost again. We noticed that Sebby’s bean was the first one to start growing. We are looking forward to seeing more bean plants start to grow too.
This week we have enjoyed using the marble run, Duplo, Mobillo, puzzles and train track and have been using positional talk such as ‘in front of, behind, under and on top of’. We have also made amazing stories around the models and small world toys.
Some of us have enjoyed dressing up and pretending to be fire fighters and police officer and building police and fire stations.
We have also enjoyed exploring mixing paints whilst fruit printing and car printing.
We enjoyed revisiting the 'Handa’s Surprise' story and did a great job of remembering what fruits were in the story and what animals took them.
Next week we will continue to observe the chrysalis and see if butterflies emerge, look after our sunflower and bean plants. We are going to have a vegetable theme and as part of this we will be exploring vegetables, preparing and eating courgette cake.
Thank you for the completed ‘Wow moment slips’ children have enjoyed sharing them with the rest of the class. If you have not had a chance to complete the ‘Wow moment slips’ sharing achievements from home yet, please would you be able to complete ready for children to share with the rest of the class next week. The Wow slips could be to celebrate a skill that your child/children have achieved through practice and resilience e.g. Putting their own socks/shoes on, riding a bike etc.
Hope you have all had a lovely weekend and look forward to seeing you all this week
Best wishes
