The Week Ahead ...24 April 2026 (by Abigail Winter (awinter)) |
To all our wonderful Highflyer families
What a first fortnight we have all enjoyed – marking a fabulously exciting start to Term 5! Only ten school days ‘deep’ but so much has already been packed in! Post our grand topic launch on Monday 13th – ‘What is it like to on live by the coast?’ followed by our celebration of World Art Day and the creation of our beautiful 3D paper-cup seagulls currently ‘flying across’ our board since the 15th, this week (27th onwards …) we will begin to identify and examine the many different features/landmarks that we might expect to find along a named coastline - e.g. beach, cliff, cave, sand dunes etc. Although cliffs, caves and beaches all represent physical features we shall also be starting to think about the various human aspects also seen at a coastline i.e. what has been built e.g. a pier, a harbour, some groynes etc. The plan, therefore, will be to, in the first instance, recognise differences between natural and physical geography – whilst enjoying several Google Map overviews using contrasting coasts around the British Isles.
A further lovely afternoon this week was equally enjoyed by all when we produced our very own posters for Earth Day (22nd) with our ‘Early Morning’ starter activities yesterday (Thursday 23rd) touching on the legendary tale of Saint George and the Dragon to mark his special annual day!
Forest School, as before, continues on Wednesday morning (between 10am – 11,45am) with our regular Outdoor P.E. still remaining timetabled for each Thursday afternoon (from 1.30pm); therefore, please do pop in any slightly lighter clothes if the weather allows – as even this week very few coats were 'willingly' taken out the moment the sun made an appearance – however briefly ;)!
A gentle plea – wherever possible – this week could, perhaps, be for the children to all bring in their yearly planner plus shared reader book (currently Snow White and the Jazz Band by Ewan Shepherd) – with, of course, our continued and hugely grateful thanks for the ongoing safe return of any previously loaned FFT books from school – to complete whole class sets already read :)
Our phonic focus for Week 3 will move smoothly onto /u/ phoneme spelt ‘o’ (e.g. other/mother) and /o/ phoneme spelt ‘a’ (e.g. want/wash) including our new Homophones of sun/son - while Maths continues to revise our previous unit on fractions - learning about ' quarters' and 'thirds' (and discovering what is a unit fraction); alongside our mastering number tasks - developing our deeper understanding of strategies to calculate and help problem solve through a second addition and subtraction (recapping tens and ones) theme.
Weekly maths homework should be with you all this evening (Friday) and shall, of course, continue throughout the remainder of this term – at the end of each Friday afternoon for the following week ...
Good Luck to all our terrific Highflyer families determined to tackle 'The Stinger' this weekend - with, of course, our usual BIG thanks to all so kindly involved; as promises to be another fantastic event!
Wishing you all another lovely week – as always …
Mrs Winters and the ‘HF’ Team
