Welcome Back!

17 April 2026 (by Abigail Winter (awinter))

To all our wonderful Highflyer families

Welcome to Term 5 and the very start of our glorious summer weeks/season together in school! Our topic focus for this term shall be learning about what it is like to live by the coast; therefore, after careful consideration I promise, we have decided to use Weymouth (in Dorset) for our first example of a coastal town.  If you have any stories about visiting there, then PLEASE do share them with us in class; Jpegs via email or photographs would be equally amazing – or if you happen to have ‘any’ seaside pics or accessible artefacts/treasures :) It is certainly an interesting coastline with Weymouth beach recently being declared one of the safest in the UK; alongside Portland with its rugged cliffs – not forgetting (and at the most southerly point!) the famous 'Pulpit Rock' which we shall study for supplying its well-renowned stone for many famous buildings and monuments. We are also hoping, very much, to examine, research and even plot the start of Chesil Beach (stretching from Portland westerly to Lyme Regis – taking in several miles along the Dorset coastline) on our own Ordinance Survey maps throughout the next couple of weeks …

Forest School continues on Wednesday morning (following our Singing Assembly and Day 3 FFT Phonics session) with, as before, our Performance Coach-led outdoor P.E./Sport sessions carrying on every Thursday - as previously timetabled between 1.30-2.30pm. However, as the warmer weather arrives it would be amazing if sunhats and water bottles could also start to appear in school – as always happy to ensure that the children are able to keep them safely within their individual tray …

Our new whole class Reading Book will be tucked firmly inside our Planners on Monday (20th) as the first T5 shared reader; however, please never hesitate to send in any previous loaned books from school (as I have already had to apologise to the lovely Miss Wall for 4 ‘incomplete’ sets so far this year) therefore we would be HUGELY grateful if any of the few outstanding copies might be returned – alongside, of course, ‘In The Year 2100’ ;)

Our phonic focus for Week 2 will be /or/ phoneme spelt ‘a’ before ‘l’ and ‘ll’ (e.g. fall/ball, talk/walk) including Homophones: there/their/they’re; whilst, in maths, we are starting a new unit all about fractions - thinking about 'parts' and a 'whole'. Our secondary focus will then be using 'half' and 'quarter' to solve everyday problems – including sharing equally and division structures.

Our weekly maths homework shall continue to popped into planners on each Friday afternoon.

On a final note, our theme of this term is EXCELLENCE; therefore, Mrs Shrimpton and I are both thoroughly looking forward to seeing multiple and brilliant examples of this in Highflyer class; while also emphasising all the incredibly different ways in how it can be shown :)

Wishing you all a lovely week ahead - as we, yet again, excitedly venture into another promising and inspirational term of learning (re: our Curriculum Letter via the class page!) …

With very best wishes – as always

Mrs Winters and the HF ‘Team’
