Unicorn Class Term 4 Week 3

13 March 2026 (by Rebecca Fenwick (rfenwick))

Unicorn Class Blog                     Term 4 Week 3                         Week Commencing 9th March 2026

Wow, what another exciting week of exploring. We loved the opportunity to interact with the farm animals seeing, touching, feeding and learning first-hand about the animals. The animals that came to see us included tame lambs, a calf, a miniature pony, chicken, ducklings, guinea pigs, mice and pygmy goats and their babies (It was their babies first visit so they had to have little coats to keep them warm).

We have been excited and enjoyed making shortbread biscuits, cards and pictures for all of our special Mummy's for Mother's Day. We hope you all have a lovely day and enjoy your biscuits.

We loved exploring slime, we thought it was very “stretchy”, “smooth”, “gooey”, “bendy” and “slimely” (Some of the words children used to describe it). We were fascinated the way we could twist it around our fingers and hands to make rings and bracelets. We discovered it was tricky to share because each time we tried to pull it apart to give to another child it kept “Stretching longer and longer but not coming apart”. Barney discovered it was easier to share it out by cutting it. Lots of us then enjoyed using our scissor skills to cut the slime.

This week we have continued to enjoy pretending to be dentists, using the home corner, dressing up, choosing and working out how to put clothes on the babies.

Our main maths focus this week has been counting, recognising numbers, matching numbers to quantities and problem solving. As part of this we have enjoyed listening to Emma Jane’s aeroplane and counting how many animals were on her plane. We enjoyed pretending chairs were an aeroplane and seeing how many children were getting on and off the aeroplane. We have also pretended to have bus journeys and do the same. We have also enjoyed taking part with number rhymes such as Five green speckled frogs, and 5 currant buns. We worked out questions such as ‘How many frogs on the log?’ ‘There are 3 frogs on the log, how many have jumped into the pool?’ etc. We have also been doing fantastic counting during snack time.

During phonics this week we have continued to play rhyming games, and play Georgie’s Gym. We are continuing to learn the words and actions to our Alphabet chant. We have been learning the letters ‘r’ (The rapid rabbit races.’) and ‘h’ (The happy horse hops). The writing cue we use to write the grapheme ‘r’ is ‘From head to tail then up and over along his ears.’ and ‘h’ is ‘From head to toe and over his back.’ We practiced writing ‘r’ and ‘h’ letters using our magic fingers in the air, in flour, using pencils and whiteboard pens.

Thank you for letting me know how your child has been helping at home. If there is anything else, please let me know and it can be added to a special leaf for our helping tree.

Next week we will be having a theme of ‘People who help us’ as part of this we will be looking at and making emergency vehicles. If you have any empty cereal boxes, milk bottle tops, lids or items that you think would be suitable to use, please can you bring them in.

Hope you are all having a lovely weekend and look forward to seeing you next week.

Best wishes

Mrs Fenwick
