Unicorn Class Term 3 Week 216 January 2026 (by Rebecca Fenwick (rfenwick)) |
Unicorn Class Blog Term 3 Week 2 Week Commencing 12th January 2026
This week we have also loved exploring the Polar Regions, we loved learning about the animals that live there. We enjoyed playing with the small world animals, looking at igloos and different homes. We had the opportunity to try and make igloos and towers using sugar cubes and salt. We went on an Arctic animal search around our classroom and when we found them we marked them off on our sheet. We cut out animals from the Arctic such as polar bears, Arctic foxes, Arctic hares, walruses and seals and made Arctic collages. We made polar bears using white paint, forks, pre-cut shapes and felt tips.
.We learnt that Antarctica is very extremely cold, the coldest place on earth. Penguins, some seals, sea lions, octopuses and whales live there. We listened to the story, ‘Lost and Found’ by Oliver Jeffers. Different emotions of the penguin and boy were discussed. Also whether we had ever lost anything and how we felt when we found it again. We were also curious as to the meaning of the words lonely and ignore. We all knew what a suitcase was and children took it in turns to say when they had seen or used a suitcase. Kailash told everyone that he had used a suitcase when he went on a plane but you can also use a bag to carry everything in. If we were going to go to the Polar regions it was decided that we would pack lots of warm clothes like we wear in the winter in England such as jumpers, hats, gloves and have a very warm coat. Also we would take lots of food and books. Some children wanted to pack the suitcase and make boats using boxes to go on adventures to the Polar regions. We made penguins using black pre-cut shapes, white paint, glue and goggily eyes.
During our hall time we enjoyed moving in different ways pretending to be penguins, we did an obstacle course, we played ‘What’s the time Mr Wolf’ and ‘Duck, duck, goose!’
This week we have loved using the Duplo, Mobillo, Magnetic tiles and blocks to make many creations that we are proud of and confident to talk about to others. We have enjoyed preparing food in the home corner and pretending to go on holiday with the babies. We have also loved sharing books.
Outside this week we have enjoyed building dens, using stickle bricks, playing with the balls, sand, looking for birds and squirrels using the binoculars, playing hide and seek, climbing on the climbing frame and creating beautiful music with the instruments and dancing.
Our maths focus this week has been exploring and using positional language such as on top of, inside, next to, under, behind and beside. We have enjoyed looking for the Arctic animals and saying where they were found. The blocks and magnetic shapes were put on top of each other and beside to make homes, parks, towers and castles for the bears and animals to go inside of, on top of, in the front of and next too.
During phonics we have been listening to environment sounds on listening walks, listening and making instrumental sounds and body percussion. Some of us have been learning our alphabet chant using letter sounds and letter names on alternate days. We have been learning the letters ‘s’ (The snake slides and slithers) and ‘a’ (Alphie asks for apples). The writing cue we use to write the grapheme ‘s’ is ‘Left around, right around, from head to tail.’ and ‘a’ is ‘Around the apple and down the leaf.’ We practiced writing ‘s’ and ‘a’ letters using our magic fingers in the air, paper, pens and using whiteboard pens.
Next week we will be continuing our winter topic and learning about Lunar New Year.
Hope you have a lovely weekend and I look forward to seeing you all next week for more exploring.
Best wishes
