Unicorn Class Term 2 Week 5

5 December 2025 (by Rebecca Fenwick (rfenwick))

Unicorn Class Blog                    Term 2 Week 5              Week Commencing 1st December 2025

There has been great excitement this week in the Unicorn Class with decorating the Christmas trees and themselves with shiny sparkly tinsel and baubles. The Unicorn Class Elf has come back this December, he has been leaving us a book present each day, that we have been enjoying sharing. We have been continuing to learn and practise songs ready for the festive singing on Wednesday 10th December at 9.15am.

We have enjoyed a Gingerbread man theme, which has included listening to different versions, retelling the story and pretending we were the characters from the story. We explored gingerbread playdough, making delicious gingerbread men and decorating them. Luckily our ones did not run away, well apart from Rupert’s Gingerbread man who had a bit of an adventure, before returning. We have also enjoyed discovering items that sink and float, in the water tray and in puddles.

Outside we enjoyed playing the gingerbread man, doing obstacle courses using tyres, crates and planks of wood. We also worked together problem solving to make an obstacle course for the balls and vehicles using gutting. We have also loved splashing in puddles and using the balls and bikes.

Our math’s focus this week has been subitising. We have been doing lots of subitising using buttons on gingerbread, shells, teddies, baubles and butterflies.

During phonics this week we have been learning the words and actions of a poem about the weather, we have used voice sounds to make sounds of the weather and to identify initial and ending sounds. We have also been oral blending and segmenting.

The home corner has been popular this week, with good imagination being used for different foods, the bauble cup cakes looked delicious. The magnetic shape tiles have continued to be popular, with amazing team work and creations being designed and made, which has included a butterfly palace and hotel. The musical instruments has also been popular this week with children enjoying exploring the different sounds made and singing songs.

On Wednesday at 9.15am we have our Christmas Festive Singing, please make your way around to the community hall entrance after bringing your children into school. Children can come into school wearing their own festive clothes for the singing.

Next week we will continue with our ‘What is a celebration?’ topic and have a ‘Christmas theme’ as part of this we will be doing Christmas arts and crafts, wrapping presents and taking turns to pretend to be Father Christmas.

Please can you make sure your child has a change of clothes at school and labelled hat and gloves now the weather is getting colder.

I hope you all have a lovely weekend and look forward to seeing you all next week.

Best wishes

Mrs Fenwick
