Unicorn Class Term 2 Week 3

21 November 2025 (by Rebecca Fenwick (rfenwick))

Unicorn Class Blog                    Term 2 Week 3             Week Commencing 17th November 2025

There has been great excitement in the Unicorn Class this week, with the dark tent being up, snowy weather on Wednesday and practising Christmas songs, ready for our grown ups coming to watch, on Wednesday 10th December at 9.15.

We have enjoyed exploring the dark tent, working out how to turn on torches and switches, exploring shadows and making shadow puppets. In the dark tent we have also explored reflectors, pretended to have discos, sleep overs and look at books using our torches to light up the pictures. We enjoyed listening to ‘Night monkey, Day Monkey’ by Julia Donaldson, ‘Owl babies’ by Martin Waddell and ‘Night time around the world’ by Britta Teckentrup. We cut out pictures and chose whether we put them on the day time side or night time side.

Outside we enjoyed exploring the snow, we noticed it was very cold and if we held the snow it melted in our warm hands. However, it made our hands very cold and wet. We discovered the sun can also melt the snow, so in the afternoon all the snow had vanished and the ground was wet. We noticed on Thursday and Friday morning the leaves and wood looked sparkly and shiny from the frost. This week we have also enjoyed having races, drawing using large chalks and using the balls, to throw, catch, kick and play football. During Forest school we loved exploring the ice in the big containers and looking at the ice on the surface of the pond. We also enjoyed using the swings, collecting leaves, playing Hide and Seek, making ramps and playing and cleaning the cars.

During our hall time we enjoyed moving around in different ways, then pretended we were frogs swimming around until the big fish came and chased us. We had to jump on an island (mat) before we got caught. We also enjoyed ‘Duck, duck, goose!’

During phonics this week we enjoyed singing the song, ‘There was a farmer who had a dog and Bingo was his name o’. We have been using body percussion with the sounds in Bingo. We have continued with rhyming words and have been making up rhyming strings with real and fake words such as dog, log, jog, fog, pog. We have continued to do orally segmenting and blending. We talked like a robot and we loved asking Bingo questions and working out what he was saying because he only used sound talk.

We have had a maths focus on size comparison this week. This has included children comparing animal sizes, models they have made from wooden blocks, knex, magnetic tiles and marble runs.

This week we have also enjoyed dressing up, playing doctors and doing jigsaw puzzles.

Next week we will continue with our ‘What is a celebration?’ and have a ‘We’re going on a bear hunt theme’ as part of this we will be doing obstacle courses, going on bear hunts and we will continue to use the dark tent, exploring light and dark with torches, reflectors and sensory toys.

Please can you make sure your child has a change of clothes at school and labelled hat and gloves now the weather is getting colder.

I hope you all have a lovely weekend and look forward to seeing you all next week.

Best wishes

Mrs Fenwick
