The Week Ahead (22.9.25) …
Last week was another wonderful week - including finding out even more about each other and how we can work as a team to truly ‘fit together’! Our PHSE has produced a super display for the classroom as well as lots of discussions about how we can ‘do our best’ each and every day. We have all become more used to most of our new books now and everyone is becoming more and more familiar with all new arrangements, books, where equipment is kept etc - really WONDERFUL stuff …
This week, in our Geography topic session, we shall be continuing to think about ‘hot’ and ‘cold’ places - and even start our new English text of Lost and Found (by Oliver Jeffers) following on from our English work based on Handa’s Surprise (by Eileen Browne).
Phonics and Spellings: As before, in Year 1, phonics is every day and any writing activities are brought together in our Jungle Club termly booklet (based on our words being learnt for that week). Spellings will continue to be given on a Monday (and tested the following week), with all new spellings stapled into your child’s planner on the correct weekly page - to, hopefully, practice these together at home over the week.
This week’s focus is: Term 1, Week 4 - long /l/ + endings to words including -y (when no change to root word).
Reading:
As our class reading book will be changed about every two weeks, this week’s new text is all about “Extreme Weather” - looking at some of the most extreme places on Earth (in particular places where temperatures are freezing cold or blazing hot, or places where it rains almost every day or not at all)!
Additionally, there will always be a ‘free choice’ book to bring home as well if required …
The children have already memorised their allocated ‘book’ number (which they shall keep throughout this year) - with the books numbered to match your child’s number. Although these class reading books are to be brought home, would it please be possible to equally ensure that they are brought in every day - simply to be used in class … for our daily reading activities!
Maths:
Alongside our Mastering Number program (and problem solving) each week, our unit of maths ‘Place Value’ will continue this week - recognising numbers, reading numbers and writing numbers - including common spatial relationships! Our maths homework shall also continue to be sent home on a Friday (and handed back in by the following Friday if at all possible …). This is directly linked to our learning for that week - however, if there are any queries about completion of the questions, please simply encourage your child to bring their homework back before the Friday due to speak to us ‘in the classroom’.
Forest School continues with eager anticipation again this Wednesday - although don’t forget a change of ‘dry’ clothes for lunchtime and beyond!?
On a final plea … it would be amazing if school planners could also be sent into school every day - just in case!
Many thanks once again for your fabulous support and have a lovely week …
Best - as always
Mrs Winters
