Unicorn Class Term 6 Week 5

29 June 2025 (by Rebecca Fenwick (rfenwick))

Unicorn Class Blog             Term 6 Week 4               Week Commencing 23rd June 2025

The Unicorn Class have loved exploring their seaside theme this week, some children shared their experiences of going to the seaside. We have been thinking about what we would take to the seaside, pretending to get our basket ready and going to the beach. We loved making ice-cream. We listened carefully to the instructions, was fascinated how the ingredients got thicker whilst it was being whisked. We loved trying our ice-cream after it had been in the freezer, we were impressed with the taste and how it looked different from when we put it in the freezer. We have had an ice-cream parlour using playdough and have been making ice-creams and lollies using paper, felt tips, straws and tape. We watched ‘A trip to the seaside’ which used Makaton signs, on the interactive whiteboard. We have been learning the Makaton signs for seaside, sea, sand and ice-cream. We also enjoyed sharing ‘The Sea Saw’, we discussed the different emotions of Sofia and her teddy. We were also amazed by the teddy’s journey to return to Sofia. We used a paper plate, glue, sand, shells and tissue paper to make our own seaside scenes.

Outside we loved making a dinosaur zoo, some of us made signs informing of what the dinosaurs ate. Whilst others made warning signs to let people know that one of the dinosaurs had escaped. These signs were then stuck up on the climbing frame (The dinosaur cages) with masking tape. Some children then played a dinosaur chasing game. We have also enjoyed pretending the floor in lava, playing in the sand and making up beach stories.

During Forest school this week we loved playing with hay bales. We used teamwork and strong muscles to transport the hay to where we wanted it and then used it to make gigantic bird nests. We also made a lava stream using the hay and made bridges to go over it. We also enjoyed using the hammock, rope swings and water play. Some of us pretended to be dinosaurs hiding whilst others came to look for us.

During phonics we have been rhyming, using alliteration, recapping all of the sounds we have learnt so far, orally segmenting and blending. We have been practising writing the letters, lots of us have wanted to use our letter knowledge to attempt to write on the small and big whiteboard, in note books and on their pictures. We have also enjoyed doing alphabet puzzles

During maths this week we have been doing lots of comparisons. We have been comparing the size of the animals in ‘The Sea Saw’ book, comparing different sized shells, comparing model sizes, the height of people, which shell fitted the most/least jelly in and which one was the heaviest/lightest.

We have enjoyed going to the all weather pitch to practise for our Sport’s Day next week.

Thursday 3rd July at 9am the Unicorn Class are having their Sports Day on the all weather pitch. Please can you bring your child/children to school at 8.40. Then make your way around to the all weather. Below is a list of your child/children’s house team, if possible please can they wear something this colour.
