Unicorn Class Term 6 Week 1

7 June 2025 (by Rebecca Fenwick (rfenwick))

Unicorn Class Blog             Term 6 Week 1                Week Commencing 2nd June 2025

Wow, what a busy and exciting start of term.

Our topic this term is ‘What will we find in space?’ As part of this we have been learning that there are 8 planets in our solar system, we have been learning a song about the 8 planets and ‘The Rockets in Space go Zoom Zoom Zoom’ to the tune of the wheels on the bus. We have been making space pictures, telescopes and rockets using junk modelling, paper, pens, glue and tape.

We listened to a real astronaut read ‘If I were an astronaut (Dream Big)’ in space. We were fascinated that when the astronaut let go of the book it floated around until she caught it. We were fascinated by the robotic arm they use to carry astronauts so they can fix the outside of the spacecraft. We have been very curious and had lots of amazing questions. We used non fiction books to help us answer some of these questions. We also listened to ‘The Space Race’. We discussed the pictures, noticing similarities and differences with the rockets the inventors made and the different aliens. We have used clay to make aliens. Although all our aliens were similar because they were all made of clay. They all looked different because we used different amounts of eyes, legs, arms. Some had the same amount of legs but were different lengths. Some of us made birthday cakes and a party for the aliens.

We have been playing ‘Duck, Duck, Goose!’, climbing the climbing frame, playing the musical instruments, taking turns on the bikes and scooters and gardening. In the water tray we have been busy exploring wind up rockets propelling through the water and pouring.

During Forest School we loved exploring large scale painting on the wooden dens and a large cloth sheet. Looking for mini beasts. Some of us enjoyed exploring the cars and ramps. We were good at taking turns using the hammock and rope swings.

During phonics we have been rhyming, using alliteration, recapping all of the sounds we have learnt so far, orally segmenting and blending. We have been practising writing the letters, lots of us have wanted to use our letter knowledge to attempt to write on our pictures, we have been making.

During maths we have been using shapes to make pictures, finding the right shapes for puzzles, talking about shapes, finding alien pairs and singing number songs such as ‘5 Little men in a flying saucer’.

The home corner has been very busy with children enjoying making delicious food, pretending to be families and looking after the babies. Some of us pretended we were grownups helping the babies with first aid. The home corner has also been a café.

This week we have also enjoyed using blocks, magnetic shapes, Duplo, Mobillo and Lego to make rockets, aeroplanes, fire engines, space stations and garages.

Next week we will be continuing our space theme and on Tuesday we are going to Beale Park on the coach. Children will need to be wearing their school uniform. As there is a slight chance of rain please make sure your child has a coat. They will need a small rucksack with a change of clothes, a water bottle and packed lunch if school is not providing one.

Hope you all have a lovely weekend and look forward to more exploring with you next week.

Best wishes

Mrs Fenwick
