Unicorn Class Term 5 Week 4

18 May 2025 (by Rebecca Fenwick (rfenwick))

Unicorn Class Blog                                 Term 5 Week 4                 Week Commencing 12th May 2025

This week we have been exploring fruit using our senses. As part of this we have loved making fruit salad using plums, pears, bananas, apples, strawberries and kiwis. We prepared our fruits by washing them and peeling some of them such as the bananas and kiwis. We then used a knife to carefully cut our fruits into small pieces. We have been very interested in spotting seeds in fruits. We have also enjoyed tasting pineapple, mango and watermelon. We noticed that kiwis had very small seeds inside and strawberries had very small seeds on the outside. We also discovered that the mango had the biggest seed. We also enjoyed listening to Oliver's fruit salad. We used paint and some of the fruits to make fruit prints. We have also enjoyed sharing Handa’s Surprise, counting the fruits in the basket, discussing which animal took each piece of fruit, what the goat did and why Handa was surprised. We enjoyed retelling the story using pictures, fruits and animal puppets to help us.

We have continued to look after our sunflower and runner bean seeds. Some of our sunflower plants have got 4 leaves now.

Our main Maths focus this week has been positional language such as on top of, inside, beside and behind we have been using this to describe where the fruits, teddies, children and blocks are. We have loved working together building different marble runs and buildings. We described where we would like the pieces to go, where we had put them and where the marble was. During Forest School and outside we also used positional language whilst climbing, playing hide and seek and whilst using the drains and cars. We have also used our positional language whilst playing with boxes which some of us made into pirate ships.

During phonics this week we have been playing listening games, singing nursery rhymes, spotting rhyming words/beginning sounds and recapping the sounds we have learnt so far. We also enjoyed playing the shark game and pirate game on phonics play to practice our reading skills.

Outside this week we have been spotting lots of mini-beasts and have been curious about looking at them closer and finding out what they eat. We have been fascinated that all our caterpillars have now turned into chrysalis and we are wondering when they will turn into butterflies.

As part of our SCARF we have been thinking about what we can do now because we kept trying and showed resilience such as Skyler said, “Look, Mrs Fenwick, I can now hop on one leg and the other.”, Freddie has been practising writing letters and he said, “Please can I write out all the alphabet, he carefully looked at the alphabet chart to copy out the letters.” Ruby said, “Look I kept trying and now I can do the baby’s buttons.” Whilst children built with the marble run they have faced challenges, showed perseverance and resilience. They have been rewarded by making fantastic marble runs they have enjoyed using. These are just a few samples of many this week. We were very lucky and loved having baby Freddie, Eliana’s baby brother, come to visit our class. We were very fascinated to hear and see what he can now do. We were very impressed by his new sitting skills and that he could now roll over to get toys. We watched him play one of his favourite games, ‘Peek a boo!’ with Eliana, we heard he loves songs and we sang him Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star. We also got to see some of his toys and we took turns shaking his rattle.

Please can you complete your child/children’s ‘Wow moment slips’ sharing achievements from home, ready for them to share with the rest of the class. The Wow slips could be to celebrate a skill that your child/children have achieved through practice and resilience e.g. Putting their own socks/shoes on, riding a bike etc.

Next week the Unicorn Class are having their class treat as they have filled the class marble jar. They have worked together being kind, helpful and persistence. Therefore, we are having a Superhero/Superato themed week. If your child would like to dress up on Tuesday they are welcome too. If this is not a day your child is in, they are welcome to dress up on another day they are in. We will be making our own costumes and Supertatoes. If you have any old newspapers please would you be able to bring these in. Please can your child/children bring in a potato, if you have not got one please do not worry as we will have some spare.

Please can you also complete the Parent/Guardian permission slip, for the Beale Park trip on Tuesday 10th June, if you have not done so already.

Hope you are all having a lovely weekend and look forward to seeing you all this week

Best wishes

Mrs Fenwick
