School Curriculum

The school curriculum at Nettlebed aims to provide a rich and stimulating environment in which the children learn. We use a variety of experiences to enrich learning and teach through a thematic approach. This means children are immersed in their topics and develop a deeper understanding and vocabulary.

Our children are inquisitive and we aim to support them in leading their own learning.

The curriculum themes show how we map the curriculum across the school. Due to the way some classes are split, we often teach topics in different ways to different Key Stages and make appropriate links. We also have 'Whole School Topics' which we mould to fit 'The Nettlebed Way' and fulfill our vision of creating rich learning experiences.

The curriculum is currently being updated to embed further outdoor learning opportunities as well as enrichment.

Our school day follows the same structure across the school and has opportunities for all subjects. Each class adapts their afternoon and has 2 sessions of PE. Please see  below for an example of our timetable.

All children when they start learn reading through a variety of approaches: phonics sessions follow the Letter and Sounds programme, whole word learning for the common exception words and reading books. The school uses a variety of reading schemes which suit different learners and include Project X books, Oxford Reading Tree and Heinemann publishers.

You can see the curriculum in full here.
