The Week Ahead in Challenger Class

Firstly, I must say what a pleasure it was to meet you all last week - and face to face as well. Thank you all for coming.
Next week is Science Week in Year 1 and we will be finding out about the different kinds of animal habitats around the world.
We will also be taking a closer look at the microhabitats in our school grounds to find out what lives there. Please bring wellies in again all week. The forecast is quite good for next week but it can be wet underfoot in the walled garden. Our science work will provide the basis for much of the written work next week as well.
In phonics, the focus is on the ew and oe digraphs. Don't forget to look out for these when you are reading at home.
Our Mastering Number sessions lessons will look at the composition of numbers 6, 7, 8 and 9. These numbers are all '5 and a bit'. Our focus last week was on 5 and the composition of 5, Children were able to subitise (see how many without actually counting) groups of up to 5 and see the compostion of 5 (5 is made of 2 and 3, or 4 and 1 or 5 and 0). This week we will build on this to look at the composition of numbers that are 5 and a bit (6 is 5 and 1, 7 is 5 and 2 etc.). These sessions are designed to build number fluency and develop number sense.
Also in maths we will be focussing on the addition symbol and finding out about fact families.
We have had great fun with our Leaf Man adventures this week. Have a look at the photos below. The children all made their own leaf man earlier in the week and on Friday we made a huge leaf man together. I wonder where he is now - only the wind knows where Leaf Man goes.
