The week ahead in Challenger

Christmas Play

It’s showtime! Well, we’re almost there. We are looking forward to welcoming you into school to watch our Christmas production of a Winter Woodland Tale. We have been rehearsing hard and the children have done a great job. Please make sure that their Christmas jumpers are brought into school at the start of this week. There are still a few outstanding. On the day of the performances, children can come to school wearing their own clothes. They will wear their jumpers for the show.

Everyone is VERY TIRED as we near the end of a very busy term and the excitement of the Christmas festivities to come exacerbates this. Please make sure children are getting plenty of early nights so that they are not over-tired come the end of the week and the day of the performances.

Spellings

Children brought home a list of Y1 CEW on Friday and a Y1 CEW dinosaur picture which they had RAG-rated. They coloured in the words according to how well they think they know them. Red – not very well, Amber – nearly there, Green – good to go! Children will have a spelling test this week on these words. Please help your child to make some progress in their learning of Y1 CEW. I do appreciate that for some children there are many words that they don’t know and I do not expect them to learn them all at once. If this is the case, just concentrate on the first column.

Writing

Our writing in the coming week will be based on the short film, Monty the Penguin (the John Lewis Christmas advert). The heart-wrenching story explores the ideas of friendship, caring and thinking of others. Children will write a letter to Father Christmas expressing their concerns for their penguin friend. I will be looking for super sentences with correct punctuation, best handwriting and some imaginative ideas.

Maths

In maths we are starting a new unit on Place Value within 20. Children will be introduced to the idea of 2-digit numbers with teen numbers considered as a ten and some ones. We will count one more and one less and compare and order these numbers.

Have a great week!
