Next Week in Challenger
What a great start to the new term! Well done to all of the children in Challenger Class for coming back to school with such a great attitude to learning. Let’s keep it going in week 2.
Topic work and Writing
We launched our new topic for this term with some fact finding about the countries of the United Kingdom and the children are beginning to understand something of the unique identity of each country. Challenger class became an unofficial branch of the UK Tourist Board for the week and children produced brochures inviting people to come to the UK. Next week sees a continuation of this research and children will be working towards producing a fact file.
Maths
In maths last week, children used part-whole models to ‘find a part’ as a strategy for carrying out subtraction and applied these skills to solving problems. We will continue with subtraction this week, using number lines and a ‘counting back’ strategy to work out answers and also the bar model. We will be exploring the inverse relationship between addition and subtraction in ‘fact families’. Have a look at this:

Remembrance Day
On Wednesday we will find out why we mark Remembrance Day. Children will have the opportunity to donate to the Poppy Appeal next week and it is important that they understand why they are doing this. We will be observing the two minute silence on that day.
Rocks
This week is science week and it is all about rocks. To start with, we will investigate our immediate surroundings and hunt for rocks in our school environment, identifying man-made and naturally occurring rocks. Later in the week, children will find out about the notable palaeontologist, Mary Anning.
Have a great week!
