Discovery Class

Given the current situation, work has been set for both year groups.

Maths: Yr 3 Please check the active learn account for various maths games.

Please continue to practise fractions on a number line, addition and subtraction with the same denominator, equivalent fractions and solve problem questions and times tables.

Yr 2 Children should use both the active learn maths games, practise the times tables, use the abacus book 1 and 2.

Year 3 and Year 2  Please practise these spellings and apply them in your writing.

RE : To learn the Easter story.

D &T: to design and make a small waterproof bag. Children to think what they would put in a small, suitable waterproof bag.

English: Children have been learning about paragraphs in SPAG. Children will write a non- fiction information text about an ocean they have researched. Children will consider the layout using a heading and sub- headings.

Topic: To look at the water cycle.

Spanish: Please find attached a word document with the links.

 Week beginning 9.3.2020

It has been another busy but fun week with parent's evening, Henley drama work and travelling tuba.

English: The children made a very good start on their fiction stories. The children needed to be mindful about all the things they have learnt in their phonics/ SPAG lessons and applying that knowledge in their writing.

Maths: Children continued with fractions.

Topic: The children were learning about rivers and the various parts of a river.

Henley Drama workshop came into school on Wednesday to work with the Ks1 children. The children thoroughly enjoyed themselves.

On Friday, year 3/4  visited the Travelling Tuba and participated as a team to perform a salsa tune. It was a fantastic experience.

Homework this week is researching an ocean and writing a non-fiction piece of text.

Week beginning 2.03.2020

It has been a very busy week with so many lovely activities.

On Monday Ks2 took part in a research, based on a well being programme (kiva) conducted by the University of Oxford.

Tuesday, Ks2 children had the opportunity to create beautiful fish, thanks to Henley Youth Festival.

Thursday was World Book Day and the children made a fantastic effort dressing up as their favourite book character and made their own book covers.

English: combined with topic work the children worked very hard on creating their fact posters on Our Watery World.

Children will be writing their non fiction stories w/b 9.03.2020 based on the Snail and the Whale story.

Maths: continuation of fractions and times tables.

DT: The children will be creating their very own waterproof bags. It would be greatly appreciated if they could bring in surplus items/ materials to help make their bags. Many thanks.

Week beginning 24.2.2020

Topic: Our Watery World

The children were introduced to the topic our watery word and have been learning about the 7 continents and 5 oceans.

English: Children looked at non-fiction text and completed comprehensions.

Maths: An introduction to fractions and building upon their knowledge.

Homework set is a reflection on what the children have been learning.

Week beginning 10.2.2020

What a great end to term 3! Celebrating cultures, traditions and foreign languages from all over the world. A massive thank you to all the parents, who came in to make this  a wonderful experience!

Maths and English was a recap and consolidation of what the children have already learnt.

Topic for Years 1, 2 and 3 is our Watery World. The children will be learning about the continents and oceans.

Week beginning 3.02.2020

The year 3's designed their own Chinese dragon masks for their dance.

English: Children wrote informal letters to Ma Liang ( Fictional Character) in China. The children described their life in England  and asked questions about China.

Maths: We continued with division and multiplications. Year 3's were taught column multiplications.

Science: We had a very practical lesson on magnetism. The children thoroughly enjoyed this activity.

 

Week beginning 27.1.2020

Last week has been an exciting but busy week.

English: The children wrote their non fiction stories about a dragon in China. 

Maths: The children have continued with division. Children have been diving numbers by 2, 5 and 10. Year 3 have been diving 2 digits by a single number with a remainder.

Science: The children have been learning about materials, their properties and absorption.

Sheldonian Theatre: It was truly a wonderful experience for all KS2 children and the teachers. Classical music performed by the Oxfordshire Youth Orchestra.

Week beginning 20.1.2020

English: The children have been listening to stories from China. The children also drew a picture of their dragons, wrote their story maps in order to write their own fiction story.

Mrs Tarling visited Discovery again and told the children all about Chinese New Year. A big thank you to Mrs Tarling.

Maths: The children have started the unit on division. This also includes multiplication.

Science : We have been looking at materials and the various uses for different materials, what is natural and what is man made.

Week beginning 13.1.2020

Our whole school Topic this term is China. Mrs Tarling paid Discovery class a very special visit. Mrs Tarling enriched our topic by sharing lots of information, experiences and also brought in a few treats. A big THANK YOU from all of us.

English: Children focused on comprehension this week. The comprehension passage were topic based.

Maths: Following on from 2D and 3D shapes the children have been learning about lines of symmetry.

Our topic work has been about China, locating it on the map and learning other geographical facts.

Science: We have looked at everyday materials and their uses. We shall continue this next week.

Homework, CEW's , spellings, reading and times tables.

Week beginning 6.01.2020

A very Happy New Year. Hope you all have had a lovely break.

English: The children shared their Christmas experiences at circle time and wrote wrote a recount of their Christmas holidays.

Maths: This week the focus has been on 2D and 3D shapes and the properties of the shapes. The children went on a shape hunt and recorded the number of shapes on a tally chart.

This week the year 3's have started recorder lessons and French.

Year 2's have also had a music lesson and will be learning the recorders. They have started learning Spanish as part of their Modern foreign language.

Lots of people to Thank!

Discovery Class would like to say a massive thank you to FONS for the generous amount raised from the cake sale. The children in Discovery chose a variety of games and toys and puzzles. The children are extremely happy!

 

Thank you to all the parents to who came in to make the Christmas lunch a success. It was so lovely.

A big thank you for the very generous presents from all the parents and children to the staff in Discovery. It was a very kind and thoughtful gesture and it's much appreciated.

There has been no homework set over the Christmas holidays. Our next topic for term 3 is China. I would really appreciate if children could do a bit of research on China, continue with their CEW's and time tables.

Next term the children in Discovery will be learning to play the recorders.

Year 3 will be taught French and Year 2 will be taught Spanish as part of our Modern Foreign Language (MFL)

Ks1 Play

The Princess And The Pea

It was an excellent performance from the children. It was thoroughly enjoyed by all.

Thank you to all the parents for helping your child learn their lines and lyrics and not to forget the costumes.

Maths:

We have continued with numberline subtractions and a bit of fractions.

RE 

Children have been learning about Christianity and the birth of Jesus Christ.

Year 3's have been practising their carol songs.

Please continue to support your child with their CEW's or year 3/4 words, along with their time tables. Thank you !

Forest School will be on Wednesday 18th Dec in the morning. Please ensure your child is dressed for the weather in the morning.

Thursday 19th Dec

Week beginning 2/12/19

It's that time of the year again. The children in Discovery have their own Christmas tree and they have started making their own decorations for the tree. We also have a few snow flakes on the window.

English

The children have written some informal letters in their books to family and friends all about Alfred The Great.

Maths

This week we have concentrated on number line subtraction.

 

PSHE

Thank you to all the parents for the lovely photographs sent in for our lesson. This has been a brilliant opportunity for the children to talk about themselves and to share some wonderful memories and getting to know each other better. 

KS1 performance is progress and the acting is great. Year 3's have also been practising their Christmas Carols.

Week beginning 25/11/19
English
Last week children wrote their fiction story about meeting Alfred The Great. The children used adjectives to make their story interesting.
Maths
We looked at  various lengths, measurements, right angles, acute, obtuse and reflex angles.
CEW year 2 and year 3 to learn their year 3 and 4 words.
Play: It's that time of the year again. The year 1 and 2's will be performing their KS1 play. Please could we have named quilts for the play. They will be returned after the play. Thank you!
Box of memories as part of our PSHE lesson. Please could we have a a few pictures of family or a picture of a favourite toy. This activity is to encourage children to speak and an activity to get to know each other better.

This week the children enacted their fiction story in groups, made their story maps and have started writing their story about meeting Alfred The Great by stepping into a time machine.

Maths

Children have been learning about position, direction and measurements.

Design and Technology (D&T)

The children had the chance to bake Alfred's Cakes!  They were a bit crumbly but really yummy.

Week beginning 11/11/19

Armistice Day 

The children as a mark of respect stood for two minutes silence.

English

The children have looked at the features of instruction writing. They wrote instructions on how to bake King Alfred's cake. They will be making the cakes in the coming week. 

Maths 

The children have been learning addition and subtraction in class this week. They have looked at column addition and subtraction.

 

History

The children have started making their fact posters on King Alfred The Great.

Whole school topic for this term is Alfred The Great.

English and History

Children have been learning about the life of Alfred The Great in English and History. In English, children answered  a comprehension passage, watched a brief video and also looked other resources to find out facts.

Maths

Children have continued with multiplication and division activities this week.

Spellings

I would urge that all children in year 2 learn their Common Expectation Words.

Week 7

October 18th,2019

English

In English we have looked at comprehension. Our main topic has been ending plastic pollution. The children have been learning to answer the questions in full sentences. 

Maths

In maths we have focused on division and multiplication.

Science

All the children have been learning the life cycle of flowering and non flowering plants and they planted their own runner bean seeds.

Homework

Some of the homework was marked this week, I apologise for the homework that has not been marked but it will be marked next week.

Week 6

October 11th, 2019

English

This week the children have looked at the format and wrote their formal letters to Mrs Greenwood about looking after our school playground by picking up litter.

Maths

The children have been learning repeated addition and multiplication using arrays.

D/T

The children have completed their bird feeders and will be hanging the feeders in the school ground. Thank you to the parents for donating bird feed and sending in plastic bottles.

Just wanted to say I am very proud of all the year 2's who took part in the Langtree cross country run!

Week 5

October 4th, 2019

English

We have been learning to write informal letters to family and friends based on our topic Eco schools.

Maths

We have looked at multiplication and adding equal groups. If would be a good idea to learn your times tables.

Science

We have looked at lots of creatures and mini beasts living in our school grounds. The picture for this week was taken on our bug hunt.

Design  and technology

The children made bird feeders out of single use plastic bottles. They have thoroughly enjoyed this activity.

Week 4

September 27, 2019

English

We explored fiction books this week and wrote our fiction stories. 

Maths

This week we have been learning all about adding and subtracting money.

Art

In art we made our marine life pictures.

Forest school   

The children had  a great time in forest school this week. Building dens, rope swings and a fire to toast marshmallows. 

Plastic bottles

Please could your child bring in a clean plastic bottle into school and if possible any spare bird seeds (nut free). Many thanks.
